It’s the only hostel, and that’s just fine. Awesome place! This was a great place to stay and explore Detroit from. A great crew of guests of varying ages and from all over, and a really great crew of managers and staff. Stay here, see the town, have some fun.
The rooms/beds were quiet and comfortable. The common area and kitchen is well kept and well equipped. The location is quiet, and safe, with Michigan Avenue restaurants and bars (Slows Bbq, Mercury Bar) close by. The grocery store is a bit of a hike past Michigan Avenue, but still walkable. The closest beer store is still a pretty short walk, but it takes you a little closer to an area where someone might ask you why you’re there (and did in fact)… But hey, all part of the experience, and worth the trip to have a beer. Maybe just take a friend if you’re heading there at night. Downtown is a bit of a walk, but just fine for a day trip.
Ignore the detractors who may tell you (at the Detroit/Windsor border no less) that you are an idiot for staying in a hostel in Detroit. The city’s bad rap lives on. But it’s a great place to check out, a very cool mix of old and new, abandoned and pristine. And Hostel Detroit is a great home base to see it from.
