EVENT OVERVIEW 

We're thrilled to announce the Detroit Exchange Artist Residency debut, which features the first solo exhibition from Canadian born, Detroit based artist Danya Ensing. At Hostel Detroit, we believe in the power of art to connect people across cultures and borders.

Danya Ensing’s Lookouts explores landscapes of absence and anticipation, all captured on 35mm or 120 film. Examining the nuanced double-meaning of both a scenic view and an exclamation of warning, Lookouts are places to take care and keep watch.

FEATURED ARTIST 

Danya Ensing’s practice spans photography, printmaking, and community-based projects that capture Detroit's evolving landscape. Her project Gateway: Ghost Boards of Detroit investigated billboard usage as indicators of social and economic change. As Director of Art Detroit Now and former Projects Manager at Hostel Detroit, she brings a unique perspective to this inaugural exhibition, understanding both our mission and Detroit's artistic ecosystem.

DETROIT-CANADA CONNECTIONS 

As a Canadian-American artist, Danya embodies this cross-border cultural exchange. There are as many Detroits as there are Detroiters, and Danya's dual perspective helps bridge neighboring cultures while highlighting Detroit's significance as a global creative hub. This natural connection perfectly aligns with our mission to create experiential connections between visitors and Detroiters, fostering creativity and global understanding of our often misunderstood city.

MISSION

The Detroit Exchange Artist Residency is an initiative of Hostel Detroit that fosters cultural exchange between Detroit and the world through the arts. The program provides exhibition and programming space for local and global artists, engages the community through events and workshops, and produces limited-edition zines documenting each residency.
